Johan Siggesson
Johan is a multi award winning fine art wildlife photographer from Sweden but residing in the small Mediterranean island of Malta. From an early age Johan was passionate about animals and the natural world and after a Safari a few years back he decided it was time to take up Wildlife Photography as a profession.
Johan's Story
Johan Siggesson's journey into the world of wildlife photography began with a childhood fascination. Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, Johan was captivated by a large, green-covered nature book at his grandmother's apartment. The vivid images of wildlife from around the globe left an indelible mark on his young mind, sparking a passion that would later define his career.
Years later, in 2012, a photographic safari to Kenya became the catalyst for a dramatic shift in his professional life. The experience was transformative, and Johan realized that his true calling lay in capturing the beauty of wildlife through his lens. He gradually transitioned from his career in web and graphic design to pursue wildlife photography full-time.
Living in Malta, a small Mediterranean island, Johan found an unexpected base for his work. Although Malta's environment isn't ideal for a wildlife photographer, its strategic location allows easy travel to Europe and Africa. Johan's work, however, is more influenced by his Scandinavian roots, characterized by simplicity, timelessness, and purity—qualities that are deeply ingrained in Scandinavian design and architecture.
Johan's approach to photography is meticulous and deeply artistic. After returning from his photography trips, he painstakingly reviews thousands of images to select the ones that best capture the essence of his subjects. His goal is to create images that stand out in an age where people are constantly bombarded with visual stimuli. He strives to produce prints that evoke emotions, tell stories, and capture viewers' attention, making them ideal conversation starters and additions to any art collection.
Travel is a significant aspect of Johan's work, and his expeditions have taken him to some of the most breathtaking locations on Earth. One of his most memorable trips was to Madagascar, a place that not only offered unique photographic opportunities but also deeply impacted him personally. The visit highlighted the stark differences in living conditions around the world, a lesson he often shares with his children.
However, it is in East Africa where Johan feels most at home with his camera. The iconic species of this region, such as lions, elephants, and giraffes, resonate deeply with him. His connection with these animals is palpable in his work, where he captures their majesty and grace with unparalleled clarity and emotion.
The digital age has brought both advantages and challenges to Johan's work. Modern technology allows him greater creative freedom and instant feedback, which are crucial for capturing the perfect shot. High-resolution cameras also enable him to produce large, detailed prints that are well-suited for art collections. Despite these advancements, the sheer volume of daily photographs means that creating impactful images requires skill, patience, and a unique artistic vision.
Johan Siggesson's life is a testament to following one's passion, embracing challenges, and creating art that resonates with people. Through his lens, he captures the essence of wildlife, inviting viewers to pause and appreciate the beauty of the natural world. His work not only showcases the splendor of wildlife but also tells a story, evoking emotions and sparking curiosity, making each image a timeless piece of art.
